The École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and is located on the shore of Lake Geneva in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Government established EPFL with the stated mission to “educate engineers and scientists, be a national center of excellence in science and technology, and to provide a hub for interaction between the scientific community and industry.” EPFL is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world.
The Supramolecular Nanomaterials and Interfaces Laboratory (SuNMIL) directed by Prof. Francesco Stellacci will be responsible for the synthesis of small gold nanoparticles that exhibit closely packed hydrophobic and hydrophilic patches on their surface. The coexistence of such domains gives the particles the ability to fuse cell membranes. These particles will serve as ‘cell docking’ moieties that, when attached to other materials, fixes them to the cell’s surface for further reporting.
